THE OUTER RIM
The Outer Rim is a massive, peripheral region containing all organized sectors of known space between the Mid Rim and the edge of the galaxy.
While known as a 'rural' region of the galaxy that is sparsely populated and poorly developed, the Outer Rim contains countless civilizations, many
heavily-populated planets, and densely-settled regions, some of which are very well-integrated into the Core civilization. The Outer Rim was also
known originally as the Distant Rim, and reaching it became an early fixation in hyperspace exploration, leading to the development of the Perlemian
Trade Route, the earliest major hyperspace lane to reach from the Core to the Rim. The Outer Rim was colonized by the Core in different eras in
different regions, as the expansive circular territory around the rim of the galaxy contains huge regions encompassing sectors which are in different
quadrants of the galaxy. Most of the Outer Rim was not colonized until the later stages of galactic history, with the exception of the Tion Cluster and
areas along the Perlemian Trade Route, which were settled not long after hyperspace travel was developed, and the Slice region, which was settled
to some degree during the galactic middle ages. The Outer Rim is generally sparsely populated, however some regions are reasonably developed, and
some regions are heavily built up. It is a significant region economically, most prominently as a source of resources, but contains planets and people
engaged in all varieties of economic activity. The Outer Rim features a wide variety of planets, many of which were extremely civilized, and even idyllic,
while many others were lawless, oppressive, or otherwise miserable. Most other planets in the Outer Rim were simply remote and relatively insignificant,
and a great many were totally uninhabited. While the region can be potentially dangerous or difficult, it also offers the freedom and opportunity
typically found in a remote and developing region. Many worlds in the Outer Rim were homeworlds of sentient races, some of which were colonized
by Humans or other interstellar species, however this region contains more homeworlds which maintained their own sovereignty than more interior
regions. Most regions of the organized Outer Rim were absorbed into the Core civilization's sphere of influence, although usually at a much later
period in galactic history. Some of populated worlds in the region are highly-developed and have significant populations. The opening of the Hydian
Way was largely responsible for the settlement of regions of the Outer Rim not adjacent to the Perlemian Trade Route or the Slice region.
The New Territories
The New Territories region is a territorial and historical extension of that region in the Mid Rim, ultimately a continuation of the Northern
Dependencies region of the Core and inner regions of the Rim. The first explorers and colonists from the Core established some isolated
outposts of Core civilization in the early galactic middle ages. The easternmost portions were colonized in the late galactic middle ages and
developed in the later periods of expansion. This region would be distinguished as the Trans-Hydian region after the opening of the Hydian Way,
in the later phases of galactic exploration. It was at that time that the majority of worlds west of the Hydian were explored or colonized, in
the area still designated as the New Territories. This region was named after its status in colonial expansion, as it was as it was largely a rural
frontier of great potential which was well-connected to the Core, which saw a huge boom in population and economic importance.
This region was sparsely populated in most areas, but contained some well-populated pockets near the Hydian Way in the east, and in
the westernmost sectors. Many important worlds in this regions were colonies of Humans or regional species, along with numerous
indigenous homeworlds of consequence. The region was absorbed into Core civilization relatively late in galactic history. Worlds seen,
mentioned, or inferred in canon which lie within the New Territories in the Outer Rim, and canon races which originate there:
The Trans-Hydian (Borderlands)
The Trans-Hydian region in the Outer Rim was historically the easternmost part of the New Territories. The development of the Hydian Way in
the later stages of galactic exploration led to designation of this region as the Trans-Hydian, meaning 'across the Hydian Way', and sometimes
informally referred to as the Borderlands region. The part of the Trans-Hydian region in the Outer Rim was almost entirely settled during
the later stages of interstellar history, except for some regions immediately adjacent to the Perlemian Trade Route, which were settled relatively
early in interstellar history. This region was too remote, difficult to navigate, and lawless in earlier time periods to attract colonists and industry.
This region became infamous during the galactic middle ages as the core region of the Sith Empire, and while involved in galactic affairs was
not in the sphere of influence of the Core for much of history. After the opening of the Hydian Way, this region became important as a region
of little regulation and significant corporate power. The Trans-Hydian region is defined strictly by the Perlemian Trade Route in the south and
the Hydian Way in the north. Worlds seen, mentioned, or inferred in canon which lie within the Trans-Hydian in the Outer Rim, and canon races
which originate there, have been divided here based on which of those hyperspace routes is more proximal to their sector:
Sectors Closer to the Hydian Way
Sectors Closer to the Perlemian Trade Route
The Slice
The Slice region in the Outer Rim is a territorial and historical extension of that region in the Mid Rim and more interior regions, and was the only
Outer Rim region significantly colonized by the Core civilization until late in galactic history. It contains numerous colony worlds, most especially
near to the Perlemian Trade Route, established in the ancient period of hyperspace travel. The Slice also contains a great number of homeworlds
of regional species, including the Hutt domains, historically the most powerful indigenous Rim civilization. The region around the Perlemian Trade
Route and the well-developed Tion Cluster were the first regions of the Outer Rim to become well integrated into Core civilization. The portion
of the Slice in the Outer Rim is sparsely populated in most regions, but due to its size still contains a very large total population. The Tion Cluster
is a relatively small region of the Slice which contains one of the densest clusters of heavily-populated worlds outside of the Core. The Slice region
was gradually absorbed into the civilization of the Core during the later stages of the galactic middle ages. The central areas of the region were
dominated by the Hutts in most historical periods, however their influence would gradually decline in the later millennia. The Slice is strictly defined
in the north by the Perlemian Trade Route, including worlds which lie along that hyperspace route, and in the south by the Corellian Run, including
worlds which lie along that hyperspace route. Worlds seen, mentioned, or inferred in canon which lie within the Slice in the Outer Rim, and canon
races which originate there, have been divided here into northern, central, and southern sectors, due to the Slice's enormous size:
Northern Sectors of The Slice
Central Sectors of The Slice and Hutt Space
Southern Sectors of The Slice
The Trailing Sectors
The Trailing Sectors region in the Outer Rim is an extension of that region from the Mid Rim. The portion of the Trailing Sectors in the Outer Rim was
developed later in the galactic middle ages along the Rimma Trade Route. The rest of the region wasn't well-settled until the later ages of expansion
and the establishment of the Hydian Way. The Trailing Sectors in the Outer Rim were absorbed into the civilization of the Core very late in interstellar
history, and contains some well-established worlds and Core colonies along the Rimma Trade Route in the west, but is otherwise dominated by
regional species. This is still a developing region in the era of the films and shows. The Trailing Sectors are strictly defined by the Corellian Run in
the east, and roughly by the Rimma Trade Route in the west, containing worlds on along both sides of that hyperspace route. Worlds seen,
mentioned, or inferred in canon which lie within the Trailing Sectors in the Outer Rim, and canon races which originate there:
The Western Reaches
The Western Reaches region in the Outer Rim is an extension of that region from the Mid Rim. The portion of the Western Reaches in the Outer Rim
was developed later in the galactic middle ages off of the Rimma Trade Route and Corellian Trade Spine. The rest of the region wasn't well-settled
until the later ages of expansion and the establishment of the Hydian Way. The Western Reaches in the Outer Rim were absorbed into the civilization
of the Core relatively late in interstellar history, and is still a developing region in the era of the films and shows. The Western Reaches is defined by
a border roughly parallel to the Rimma Trade Route in the east, and has an ill-defined border in the west, where Wild Space and the Unknown Regions
begin, and few hyperspace routes are established. Worlds seen, mentioned, or inferred in canon which lie within the Western Reaches in the Outer Rim,
and canon races which originate there:
Region Not Yet Established
Worlds seen, mentioned, or inferred in canon which lie within the Outer Rim, but whose sector or grid coordinates
have not yet been established, and canon races which originate from these worlds:
