New Republic Symbol

New Republic, Coruscant
The New Republic was a federal and democratic interstellar political order with member worlds spread throughout the galaxy, which claimed
to be the arbiter of interstellar affairs as the most dominant power to have emerged from the Galactic Civil War. The New Republic was declared
in 7981 (4 ABY), representing the materialization of the political goals of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, also known as the Rebel Alliance.
In many respects, the New Republic was yet another incarnation of the Galactic Republic, which was formed around 25,000 years before
the New Republic and had been nearly destroyed or irreparably fragmented several times in history, only to be reformed or reconstituted.
The 23 years of Imperial rule were the only time in that long history where the Republic was totally destroyed, and as a result, this incarnation
is officially styled as the New Republic rather than once again calling itself the Galactic Republic. This is also because the New Republic wished
to distance itself from the divisive history of the overbearing Galactic Republic, as well as from any association with the Galactic Empire
the Republic became. This distinction was also a reflection of their political philosophy, as unlike the Galactic states, the New Republic did not
claim jurisdictional authority of over all organized sectors of the known galaxy, limiting its administration to member worlds and demarcated
regions of interstellar space. The New Republic more closely resembled a galactic federation than a federal republic, except in the Core regions,
where its authority and stability was greatest. In the decade after the Civil War, the New Republic is estimated to have contained several
thousand member worlds, and to have held a varying degree of sovereignty over hundreds of thousands of smaller or uninhabited worlds.

CIVILIZATION
The interstellar civilization of the New Republic primarily represented that of the Core, and its Human-dominated civilization centered around
the city planet of Coruscant, believed to be the ancient homeworld of the Humans. It differed from most other eras of recent galactic history
in that the Core's political domination over the Rim regions was severely reduced, however its cultural influence was still significant. The New
Republic's principal members in the Core were usually post-colonial, Human-dominated offshoots of Core civilization or homeworlds like
Mon Cala which shared the values and priorities of galactic republicans. The civilization in the New Republic saw itself as the restoration of
civil society after the brutality of the Empire and the devastation of the Civil War, and thus its government pursued a pragmatic policy of
reconciliation with Core worlds which had favored the Empire. The tenuous balance this created required the New Republic to adopt many
of the confederate principles championed by the Separatist Alliance during the Clone Wars, emphasizing the independent sovereignty of
every planet and their right to free association. This eased the reintegration of central areas of the galaxy, but left a political and social divide
which required endless political compromise, ultimately leaving the state somewhat ineffectual. The Core regions were too overpopulated
and economically integrated not to exist in a political balance, thus, the New Republic's civilization was the result of a necessary balance
between the interests of pro-Rebel Human worlds, pro-Empire Human worlds, and non-Human homeworlds in the Core regions. Its inherent
nature as a decentralized state with a weak central government prevented it from projecting significant power in the Rim regions during its
first decade. New Republic civilization saw itself as pan-galactic and multicultural, and promoted the concept of the eventual reunification
of the galaxy under a peaceful and democratic order. Like any civilization, the New Republic's many worlds were united by language,
commerce, currency, communication systems, record keeping, and historical memory.

Language
The people of the New Republic used an unknown multitude of unique languages, however the most commonly used language is called Basic,
which is of course in reality English or which ever language you are watching it in. Basic is a trade language developed near the birth of
the Galactic Republic, which is primarily the old Human language Coruscanti, with words from numerous other languages, including
the language of the Duros and other prominent species in the Inner Core. Other languages were regionally important, such as Bocce, which is
also a language of trade, or Huttese, which is widely used by non-Hutts. While several other alphabets have been seen, especially those used
to write languages other than Basic, the most widely used alphabet was Aurebesh, named for its first two letters. It is believed to be
a derivation of the script used by the Rakatan Infinite Empire, a significant pre-Republic empire which held some important regions of the Core.

Interstellar Commerce
Interstellar trade and commerce was the lifeblood of the New Republic, and was the primary reason the New Republic existed a stable
political entity. The daily volume of interstellar trade in the New Republic was astronomical, due to the needs of the Core's massive population,
and the incredible number of industrial and commercial interests of all sizes in the Core which must source materials off-world. The complex
network of producers, exporters, transporters, importers, and distributors which had been significantly disrupted during the Clone Wars
was streamlined and reconstituted under a fascist economy dominated by monopolistic and state-affiliated entities under the Empire.
The Empire gradually nationalized nearly every aspect of the Imperial economy, leaving only the closely monitored Corporate Alliance as
the last vestige of free trade. Large state-affiliated companies like Kuat Drive Yards and Sienar Systems were given monopolistic control
over high technology and heavy engineering, to control production and distribution of the means for defense, trade, and commerce.
The Civil War had seriously disrupted these supply chains, many of which became strained beyond capacity or totally destroyed during
the last two years of the conflict. This left the New Republic to inherit an economy dominated by undesirable, monopolistic economic entities
while at the same time in dire need of the restoration of supply chains and the return of economic activity and production. This forced
the New Republic to accept the prominent interests as the initial components of the new interstellar economy, presumably maintaining
control over the Banking Clan, and permitting the continuation of the Corporate Alliance largely as it had under the Empire. Semi-national
entities like the Mining Guild and Kuat Drive Yards are assumed to have returned to a relationship with the state similar to that which
they had enjoyed under the Republic. It is unknown how the New Republic dealt with Imperial state-corporations like Sienar Systems.

Currency
New Republic currency was known as the Datary or the Credit, which was both a digital currency and a hard currency. It was fiat backed by
the authority and legitimacy of the New Republic, which was generally well-received in the Core after the Imperial surrender, however
remained less well-received in most regions of the Rim for years afterward. They were exchanged by New Republic banks 1:1 for old Imperial
Credits, however Imperial Credits were still far more numerous in circulation, and even sometimes considered more acceptable than New
Republic credits. As a result, currency from some of the more stable and prosperous worlds in the New Republic, like the Mon Calamari
currency called Flan, were often considered to be a more spendable currency. As in any era, Credits were used alongside numerous other
forms of currency due to the diverse nature of trade and commerce in the galaxy. The hard currency was issued in Credit chips and larger
Credit ingots, with a range of denominations and values, and was presumably still issued by the Banking Clan under government control.

HoloNet
HoloNet was the primary interstellar communications and data transfer system utilized by the galaxy. In addition to its use as a communications
system, HoloNet carried live broadcasts which could be viewed with private holo receivers or presented on large screens. It was once again
a decentralized network of local and planetary transmitters which was augmented by regional and local transmission and relay stations
maintained by the central government, as it had been in the Republic. The Empire had centralized the existing network of regional and local
transmission and relay stations, and worked to reduce of eliminate local and planetary transmitters outside of their authority. The HoloNet
network was seriously damaged during the Civil War, by sabotage, destruction of planetary facilities, and the complete breakdown of regular
maintenance. The system was largely restored by integrating new relays and communications centers with the intact portions of the original
grid, however it remained unreliable and piecemeal in many regions not governed by the New Republic or another stable government. It is
unclear if the New Republic abandoned the Empire's monitoring of the system, or if operations returned to the policies of the Galactic Republic.

LEADERSHIP
New Republic Leadership
The New Republic was led by a congress known as the Senate, sometimes referred to as the Galactic Senate despite not having representatives
from every organized sector. The New Republic Senate had the legislative and executive authority over New Republic worlds and demarcated
regions of space, within the framework of the Charter of the New Republic. The Senate also acted as the executor of the Galactic Concordance,
which gave the New Republic the power to act anywhere in the galaxy to enforce the terms of that treaty. Well-populated member worlds were
given seats in the Senate, as well as sectors which were entirely within New Republic jurisdiction. Unlike the Galactic Republic, the New Republic
did not maintain semi-autonomous sector bureaucracies, except in areas under their control with no major population centers but many
populated worlds. In all other instances, local planetary governments were considered sovereign and autonomous except concerning matters
delegated to the Senate by the Charter. The New Republic Courts were autonomous of the Senate, but were subordinate to its legislative
directives. Each world or sector's delegation could contain additional Senators or other representatives, but only received one vote in session.
New Republic Government
The New Republic's government was formed from the illegal government in exile created by the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the reign
of the Empire. The members of the Rebel Alliance's governing Council were made the provisional government of the New Republic in the first
half of 7981 (4 ABY), with their leader Mon Mothma appointed as interim Chancellor. After the official end of the Civil War, elections were held
for the Senate, and Mon Mothma was selected as the first elected Chancellor of the New Republic. It is unknown when her term expired.

MEMBERSHIP
The New Republic was made up of thousands of member worlds, which accounted for only a fraction of the over 24,000 member worlds
of the previous Republic. Many thousands more inhabited planets with populations too small to be members were voluntarily under
New Republic jurisdiction, as well as many habitable worlds with little to no population which were found within the New Republic's
defined territory. The capital of the New Republic was Chandrila, the first time any world other than Coruscant was the galactic capital
in over 25,000 years. It is presumed that most, if not all Core worlds which were members of the Republic were also members of
the New Republic, but due to to their political principle of free association, no world is certain to have been a member without some
confirmation from canon or at least supplementary material. Worlds thus far confirmed as New Republic members:

UNDERWORLD
Due to its huge population and the state of galactic civilization, the New Republic had an extensive criminal underworld. The power of
organized crime grew immensely under the corrupt administration of the Empire, whose officials conspired with criminal gangs within
the Empire, while allowing criminal syndicates to flourish in the Rim regions as a matter of unofficial Imperial policy. The Civil War not
only devastated regular supply chains, leading to an increase in black market trade, but also increasingly left the galaxy with local
authorities heavily occupied or no longer present. As the power vacuum in the galaxy grew, and entire regions became poorly governed,
criminal empires began to expand to fill the void with their own leadership, becoming regional states. Organizations like the Hutt Clan
and the Pyke Syndicate used their territories in the Rim as power bases to increase their already lucrative and expansive business within
the New Republic. Organizations like Crimson Dawn, which had grown to prominence within the Empire, were able to take advantage
of the era of weak central government to cement their place within the underworld of the new regime. The New Republic's inability to
challenge these powerful criminal networks was largely due to their limited resources and the significant limits to their reach.
