The New Republic Defense Forces were created from the military forces of the Rebel Alliance in 7981 (4 ABY), about a year before they
emerged as the victorious side in the Galactic Civil War. It had grown to a significant size in its first year of existence, but was severely
reduced in shortly after by the Military Disarmament Act. The NRDF was a philosophically conflicted organization which often conducted
"defense" by offensive actions and served a government devoted to demilitarizing the galaxy which was also desperate to maintain
defensive potential against the numerous hostile domains in the post-war galaxy. The NRDF was divided into two primary branches:
the New Republic Army and the New Republic Defense Fleet, responsible for navy and starfighter corps resources. The High Command
served as the general staff of the New Republic military, who reported directly to the Chancellor and the Senate. The ranks and insignia
used by the NRDF were inherited from the Rebel Alliance. There may be some yet unseen expansion of departments or augmentations.

THE NEW REPUBLIC DEFENSE FLEET
The New Republic Defense Fleet was formed by combining the Rebel Alliance Fleet with captured and defecting Imperial Navy vessels,
as well as ships from a diverse array of planetary defense forces. It grew in size until it achieved near parity with the dwindling Imperial
Navy, which it eventually eclipsed by the end of the Civil War. The NRDF was significantly reduced in accordance with treaty, but remained
the largest operational navy in the galaxy in order to maintain defensive potential and to enforce the terms of the Galactic Concordance.
NRDF personnel were largely drawn from the experienced ranks of the Rebel Fleet, augmented by new enlistment and recruiting.
Leadership
The admiralty of the NRDF were subordinate to military High Command, and ultimately to the Senate and its Chancellor. NRDF Command
held direct authority over the Fleet as well as the New Republic Starfighter Corps. Naval officers have thus far been seen to be typically in
command of overall New Republic military operations, however the navy and army seem to largely work as a fully integrated force much
as they had in the Rebel Alliance. This is further reinforced by their continued use of a uniform set of rank titles for both branches.

Starfleet
The New Republic Starfleet was based around dozens or perhaps hundreds of huge capital ships, supplemented by thousands of smaller
cruisers, support vessels, and starfighters. Most smaller NRDF ships were those vessels widely-used by the Rebel Fleet during the first
decade of the New Republic, while most of their capital ships were products of Mon Calamari Shipyards. The main exception to this
were the Starhawk-class battleships first produced in the final year of the Civil War from dismantled Imperial destroyers. These are
stated to have become a staple of the NRDF, and although they have not yet been seen in canon, they are likely to appear soon.

THE NEW REPUBLIC STARFIGHTER CORPS
The New Republic Starfighter Corps was a distinct branch of the New Republic Defense Fleet, which maintained its own facilities,
personnel, and equipment. NRSC squadrons served as the primary patrol and reconnaissance force of the New Republic.
Leadership
The New Republic Starfighter Corps was composed of experienced pilots from the Rebel Alliance, as well as those who had been
recruited since the end of the war. In the first decade of the New Republic, NRSC leadership was heavily dominated by Civil War
veterans. The leadership of the Corps was subordinate to Fleet Command, and ultimately to the Senate and the Chancellor.
Corps officers usually presided over starfighter assets only in battle, subordinate to any mission command.
Known Staff Officers
Organization
The NRSC was divided into Squadrons, which may have been elements of larger Wings and Groups, however that is not certain.
Some squadrons were attached to the Fleet, while others were based at NRSC installations.
Known Squadrons
Forces
The NRSC relied heavily on starfighers produced for the Rebel Alliance, in particular Incom Corporation's X-Wing, which were produced
in large numbers near the end of the war in support of the Rebellion. These were presumably still in production in the early years of
the New Republic. It seems unlikely than many Clone Wars-era Y-Wings survived the Civil War, so the NRSC's apparently healthy stock of
these fighters must have been produced during the Civil War or afterwards, despite this design being decades out of date. Presumably
some NRSC forces are better equipped, and the NRSC is assumed to have used other fighters which have not yet been seen.
Starfighters
Facilities
The NRSC maintained bases wherever they were considered strategically useful or advantageous. Known worlds with NRSC bases:
Regional bases in remote or peripheral areas served as the platforms for the NRSC's patrol efforts, which were often the only organized
interstellar law enforcement. Adelphi base in the Western Reaches was one such facility conducting operations for the 'Spinward Patrol'.
THE NEW REPUBLIC ARMY AND SECURITY FORCES
The New Republic Army was formed from the relatively small Rebel Alliance Army, which ballooned in size to include millions of soldiers
during the final year of the Civil War. After the Military Disarmament Act, the NRA was significantly downsized, and began to transition
into a security and peacekeeping force. Combat ready units were still maintained, however most units became essentially state police.
Leadership
The general staff of the NRA was subordinate to military High Command, and ultimately to the Senate and its Chancellor. Army command
held direct authority over regular Army combat units, New Republic security forces, and the Correctional Corps, which handled interstellar
criminals charged under New Republic courts. Little is known about the Army's general comportment and leadership, although it can be
assumed that some combat potential remained, and that most leaders were experienced Rebel military and other Civil War veterans.
Known Staff Officers
Forces
There were presumably a number of varieties of New Republic troopers with specialized training and equipment. The majority of Alliance
troopers were security forces or other military police, however many were also infantry to be deployed as peacekeepers. The NRA must
have operated a variety of armor, walkers, and other assault vehicles, as well as artillery, ground transport, and air assault craft, although
this has not yet been seen in canon, but is certainly implied given the scale the Army reached at the end of the Civil War.
