Star Wars - Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
There is unrest in the Galactic Senate. Several thousand solar systems have declared their intentions
to leave the Republic. This separatist movement, under the leadership of the mysterious Count Dooku,
has made it difficult for the limited number of Jedi Knights to maintain peace and order in the galaxy.
Senator Amidala, the former Queen of Naboo, is returning to the Galactic Senate to vote on the critical
issue of creating an ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC to assist the overwhelmed Jedi....
CONTINUITY
Episode II takes place ten years after Episode I, three years before Episode III, and twenty-two years before Episode IV.
The planets Kamino and Geonosis are seen for the first time. Five worlds are seen in this film:
The film takes place over the course of 8 days. Day 1 - Assassination Attempt (--> deleted scene Senate session).
Day 2 - Meeting in Chancellor's office --> Bounty hunter killed outside of bar. Day 3 - Jedi Council's orders --> Arrival on Naboo.
Day 4 - Audience with the Queen --> Obi-Wan vs Jango. Day 5 - Leaving Naboo --> Massacre of the Tuskens.
Day 6 - Anakin returns with mother's body --> Senate grants emergency powers.
Day 7 - Anakin and Padme arrive on Geonosis --> Dooku arrives on Coruscant. Day 8 - Clone armies shipping out --> Wedding.
- Although many planets are not actively part of the Republic, and some lie outside Republic control, the Separatist Crisis is about more than the loss of thousands
of star systems. The issue is more about the prospect of a rival state that would challenge the Republic and divide the galaxy, particularly if thousands of Republic
member worlds are forming the core of the new state. Nevertheless, membership in the Republic does seem to be regarded as a permanent arrangement.
Main Article: The Galactic Republic and the Neutral Systems
- Coruscant has a naturally occurring water cycle which is artificially maintained, due to the total transformation of the planet over 90,000 years before the era of
the films. The planet once hosted large oceans, seas, and lakes, which were the repositories for the planet's water. As the surface of the planet is now covered
by thousands of layers of artificial structures, rain water is collected and channeled to meet the needs of the planet's massive population, and whatever
water does not evaporate, or isn't breathed out by beings, is used in the carbon-dioxide filtration systems and returns to the atmosphere as vapor.

Padme's speech in the Senate shows that she understands what is going on, despite not understanding the role of
the Sith. The Separatist leaders say they want peace, the Republic leaders say they want peace. If she is being
targeted for leading the opposition to militarization, some parties that stand to benefit greatly from war are
responsible. Her implication, as usual, is that the trade guilds, or the Trade Federation specifically, are behind
the attempt on her, and the push for war, which is of course true. The guilds declare themselves neutral, but are
deeply ingrained in the political machine of both sides, and stand to benefit from the war. Of course, she does not
know that both sides are also led by Sith Lords pretending to be politicians interested in harmony and the public good.
- The Chancellor's office is located in the Republic Executive Building, sometimes called the Senate Office Building, a large, domed structure which is not
less prominent than the adjacent Senate building. The various Senators' offices are also located in this building.
- The growing power of the dark side of the Force is increasingly affecting the ability of the Jedi to see the future. Yoda's comments seem to imply that
ordinarily, something as significant as whether or not there is about to be a huge galactic war should be detectable by the Jedi as a group.
- The Loyalist Committee that includes Padme and Bail Organa seem to be made up of Senators who are less corrupt, believe strongly in the importance
of the Republic and its democratic values, and unlike many of their colleagues, resist the idea of using force to settle the Separatist crisis.
The Committee is headed by the delegations from Naboo, Alderaan, and Ryloth.
- When Palpatine finishes Padme's thought, Yoda looks at him suspiciously. He may have just had a brief sense of the dark side from Palpatine, but he also
is a politician, and the Jedi are used to a certain amount of that from them. It is more likely that he has noticed a possible use of predictive Force sense,
which can allow a Force wielder to anticipate what is just about to happen. Yoda may be trying to decide if this is what he has just witnessed, or if Palpatine
simply knows Padme well enough to know what she is thinking. Either way, Yoda senses that Palpatine is up to something here, but lets it pass.
Obi-Wan remarks that Palpatine is "very clever at following the passions and prejudices of the Senate", suggesting that the Jedi consider politicans to be
a necessary evil in a democracy, and aren't naive enough to believe politicians are well-intentioned. They are aware that Palpatine has his own personal
interests beyond what is good for the Republic, but are unable to distinguish his evil scheme to seize absolute power from ordinary political wrangling.
The predictive Force ability gives Jedi and others a sense of what is about to happen, if they are focused enough to sense it, and other factors don't interfere.
Obi-Wan and Anakin are ironically distracted from their focus on monitoring the Senator by a conversation about how powerful their Force sense is.
It's clear from Maul's defeat in Episode I that any surprise which breaks one's concentration can overcome this ability.
- Putting Anakin and Padme together seems to have been Palpatine's intentional desire, likely another example of something he has seen through the Force
as being beneficial to his desire to turn Anakin down a path towards the dark side. He jumps at the chance to recommend Obi-Wan be assigned to
protect her, knowing that Anakin will inevitably have his destiny intertwined with Padme's if the two can be put together.
Main Article: Darth Sidious and The Plan
- Padme resides in the Senate Apartment Complex, an exclusive building located in the Senate District of Galactic City, the artificial surface of Coruscant.
- Obi-Wan once fell into a nest of gundarks, and Anakin rescued him. Obi-Wan has also repeatedly told Anakin to stay away from power couplings in
the past, obviously because Anakin has on several occasions had not avoided them, and they can be potentially dangerous or troublesome.
- Queen Jamillia was elected the leader of the Naboo, sometime after Episode I, probably in 7949 (28 BBY) as explained below, six years before this film.
If the probe that delivers the creatures to Padme's room could quietly cut the glass-like material to deposit them,
why couldn't a similar probe with a small blaster have been sent, or one that launches a small but strong explosive?
From the angle of the hole it cut, it seems to be basically pointing right at her. If something can fly up and cut
the window without setting off any alarms, there are numerous ways to kill her that don't involve giving anyone
time to potentially react. R2 would have been little help if the courier droid were equipped with a simple blaster.
- Zam Wesell, the changeling bounty hunter, uses a KiSteer 1284 projectile rifle, a traditional firearm which shoots solid projectiles.
- Coruscant's air traffic lanes, known as skylanes, are auto-navigated travel lanes for repulsorcraft. Generally speaking, the height above the surface of
a given lane is determined by the distance intended to be traveled, so that faster moving long distance travel occurs at a higher altitude than local
surface traffic. Vessels are automatically guided by their on-board navigation systems, but are still free to drive themselves.
- Obi-Wan and Anakin follow Zam Wesell into the Outlander Club, a bar and gambling establishment in the Uscru District of Coruscant, which is a notable
entertainment district. The Aurebesh signs outside and within the main level bar identify this part of the establishment as 'Club Orb'.
- One of the screens in the Outlander Club is showing a broadcast of a team field sport where the competitors are droids. Droid sports may seem predictable, but
in reality are as difficult to predict as organic sports, and thus potentially as interesting to watch. As each team of droids is programmed to do their best to win,
they will always execute correctly, and can only achieve victory over an equally correct opponent through tactics. The specific choices each member of a team
make during play are also a matter of learned experience and reaction to the choices of the opponents, making the results as unpredictable as organic sports.
Main Article: Droid Intelligence
- Jango shoots Zam Wesell when she is about to reveal his identity, so instead of his name she says "murishani... sleemo". Sleemo is Huttese for slimeball,
and is a popular derogative. The first word is Huttese for bounty hunter. Other sources claim the first word is "wee shahnit...", of uncertain meaning.
- The Jedi Council has two new members, Shaak Ti and Coleman Trebor, who have replaced Yaddle and Yarael Poof. The later are presumed dead, having been
old when seen ten years prior in Episode I, however it is possible to retire from the Council, usually for reasons of desiring a different assignment.
- Palpatine is seen to have followed Anakin's career with great interest, as he promised in Episode I, and it is seen that he has taken on a role as personal advisor
and father figure to Anakin. He is already subtly planting his seeds of discord between Anakin and the Jedi Council, giving Anakin the impression that his
supposedly impartial analysis is that the Council is holding him back. His reaction to Anakin's mission that "they've finally given you an assignment" is met with
Jedi-like humility from Anakin, who unfortunately credits Palpatine's guidance in dealing with the Council. Palpatine continues to shape Anakin's goals and
ambitions, telling Anakin that he is going to be the greatest Jedi ever. Anakin may have felt some of this on his own as a student, but Palpatine's specific
framing of the Jedi and their motives, as well as Anakin's potential, has clearly already been absorbed by Anakin, who tells Padme that he is already ahead of
Obi-Wan, who he had just described as being as wise as Yoda and as powerful as Mace. Obi-Wan is in fact holding him back, as are the Jedi Council, and won't
let him advance or take the trials, not only because he is the Chosen One of uncertain future, but because he hasn't demonstrated the necessary maturity and
emotional wisdom that can only come from experience. Many Jedi who are older than Anakin, who is nineteen at this time, are still Padawans.
- Mace mentions that the prophecy says the Chosen One is the only one who can bring the Force back into balance. George Lucas has explained that the Sith
are a concentration of unnatural dark side energy that disrupts the balance of the Force. If this balance was not restored 1000 years ago with the destruction
of the last Sith empires, why were the Jedi skeptical that the Sith were still around? It may be that the cloud over the Force caused by the dark side had not yet
grown to an extent that the Jedi considered it vital to correct the imbalance. Beings who are to various degrees less connected to the Force still produce a
collective imbalance in the Force when they act out of selfish, evil, or malicious intent, though not nearly to the extent of a dark side Force wielder.
- Jar Jar Binks has been made the Gungan Representative to the Naboo Senate delegation. As seen elsewhere, all persons on a Senate delegation are considered
to be members of the Senate, however each delegation can only cast one vote on any given bill or proposal.
- The Military Creation Act is a bill in the Galactic Senate introduced around a year earlier in response to the Separatist Crisis, which began roughly two years
earlier as the political momentum for secession grew. Padme has been worked for the last year to defeat this act in the Senate. The Republic has no standing
army prior to this point. The Republic military of this time includes only a modest but respectable Navy, the Senate Guard and the Senate Commandos, who
mostly deal with high-level security, and the Jedi Order, who along with a paramilitary police force known as the Judicial Forces, handle situations where
military force is required on a limited scale. As an intergalactic state committed to peace, large-scale militarization was until this point considered antithetical.
- Dex references prospecting beyond the Outer Rim, reinforcing the notion that this region is a frontier not unlike the North American west in the 19th century,
with Coruscant and the Core playing the role of the more established and populated east coast. The more populous planets of the Outer Rim would similarly
be like the big cities of California of that time, with much of the rest of the Rim sparsely populated, undeveloped, or not fully explored. Based on how long it
takes Anakin and Padme to reach Naboo, and Obi-Wan to reach Kamino, less than a day's travel, hyperspace travel is somewhat faster than taking the train
to the west at the end of the 19th century, and is similarly limited in reaching destinations quickly by their proximity to the major hyperspace routes.
Main Article: Hyperspace Travel
- Obi-Wan tells Dex, "if droids could think there would be none of us here", during the investigation which leads him to the clone army, who are in essence
organic battle droids who can think, and who will be responsible for virtually eliminating the Jedi Order over three and a half years from this point.
- The case of Dooku shows that it is possible, although rare, to be a Jedi and leave the Order. It is unclear exactly why it is "not easily" done, according to Obi-Wan.
"The Lost Twenty" are the Jedi whose busts are in the Jedi library, sitting atop pillars at the end of the rows of archives.
These are the Jedi who have left the Order in its history, although likely only in the last 1000 years since the founding
of the current Republic. Obi-Wan and Jocasta Nu are discussing the head of Dooku, referencing that he and
Qui-Gon were very much idealistic Jedi who felt the High Council often sacrifices the values of the Jedi in their
politically motivated service to the imperfect Republic with its element of corruption. Jocasta admires him as
an individual thinker, but like his apprentice Qui-Gon, Dooku's real issue was that the Order didn't always live up
to his high standards, or their own. Dooku is clearly still admired by many Jedi, including Mace and Jocasta.
- A good example of how remote the Outer Rim is Kamino and the Kaminoans. Despite having been erased from the Jedi archives, Kamino was in there before,
meaning that its existence was known by some people at some point in history, but the planet had fallen out of the public consciousness, and maybe never
really was a part of it. This is likely due in part to the Kaminoans insular nature. Jocasta talks about the archives in a way which suggests they are more ancient
and extensive than most Republic maps. Why the Jedi haven't shared their detailed charts with the Republic is likely due to their practice of compartmentalizing
information, which could also be seen as a desire to wield greater power through superior knowledge. As a result, it was only necessary for Dooku to erase Kamino
from the Jedi library to completely take it off the grid, lest the Jedi arrived upon some trail that lead there for any reason and uncover the unfinished clone army.
Jocasta's statement about the completeness of the archives must be taken as hyperbole, or to imply the caveat 'within known space', as there are some unknown
regions of the galaxy, and almost certainly some things out there in all parts of the galaxy the Jedi don't have in their archives.
- Dooku removed the Kamino starsystem from the Jedi archives, as is clear from his central role in the creation of the clone army. This was about the time of Episode I,
and before he officially retired from the Jedi Order, and thus he was already working with Sidious when Maul was Sidious' apprentice and Dooku was a Jedi.
Main Article: Dooku, Sifo-Dyas, and the Clone Army
- Padme Amidala was Queen in Episode I, which was in 7945 (32 BBY). Jamillia is now Queen, and it is 7955 (22 BBY). In The Clone Wars 'Blue Shadow Virus' (S1E17),
which takes place next year in 7956 (21 BBY), Neeyutnee is Queen. Padme references her two terms as Queen, and that two terms is the legal limit on Naboo, and
that the next Queen asked her to serve as Senator. Palpatine describes Padme as "recently elected" in Episode I, in 7945 (32 BBY), and Padme became a Senator in
7949 (28 BBY), therefore one term as Queen on Naboo must be two years. The Queen after her is named in supplementary material as Reillata, who was Queen
from either '49 to '51, or '49 to '53. Jamillia was therefore Queen from '51 to '55 or '53 to '55, and this is her last year, to be followed by Neeyutnee.
- Governor Bibble of Naboo mentions that "there hasn't been a full-scale war since the formation of the Republic." This must be a reference to the formation of this
current incarnation of the Galactic Republic, about 978 years before this film, in 6977 (1000 BBY), which came at the end of a series of galaxy-wide conflicts.
Since the formation of the very first Republic, older than even the Old Republic of antiquity, about 25,000 years earlier, there have been many full-scale wars.
The last millennium of Republic rule has been a largely peaceful era, which has only seen planetary conflicts or occasional regional wars.
- After four trials in the Supreme Court, Nute Gunray is still the Viceroy of the Trade Federation. The implication seems to be that the courts are politicized and corrupt to
the same degree as the Senate, which is not surprising since the Republic's legislature is its single most powerful branch of government, and almost certainly appoints
the judges to Galactic Courts, especially the Supreme Court. High profile organizations like the Federation are subject to the courts, but also have many allies there.
- Obi-Wan's astromech is R4-P17, who serves with Obi-Wan at times until the very last days of the Clone Wars, when it is destroyed in the first scene of Episode III.
- Kamino is a watery planet located in the Abrion Sector of the Slice region of the Outer Rim, twelve parsecs (about 39 light years) south of the Rishi Maze. It is a rocky
world with continents, but all land was long ago submerged beneath the ocean, leaving only aquatic life on the planet, besides the sentient Kaminoans, who used
technology to build cities above and below the surface. While Kamino is the homeworld of the technologically advanced Kaminoans, it has spent many thousands
of years unknown to most of the interstellar community, as they are a traditionally isolationist society. Their advanced cloning facilities are a planetary business,
and are located at Tipoca City, the planet's administrative capital, although probably not its most populous city.
Was the clone army ordered before, during, or after Episode I? Is Prime Minister Lama Su genuinely surprised that
Sifo-Dyas is dead, or is he feigning ignorance? Why does Obi-Wan seem certain Sifo-Dyas "was killed almost ten years ago,"
but then about an hour or so later says that he "was under the impression he was killed before that"? Additionally, what
does Lama Su mean by "otherwise, a mature clone would take a lifetime to grow, now we can do it in half the time"?
200,000 mature clones with a million more almost completed sounds like they can create a mature clone in less than 10
years. The implication seems to be that it ordinarily takes almost 20 years for a Human to reach maturity. The group of
adolescent clones is described as having been created about 5 years earlier, meaning the infant clones in the pods and
the younger clones won't be ready for a decade. Perhaps their contract stipulates they will supply the Republic on
a steady basis for years to come. Perhaps they have found ways to accelerate their growth even faster in the meantime.
Perhaps they took time to develop and perfect the clones at first, and the actual production time is more like 7 years,
which would make more sense, but the implication of this film and later material seems to be a mature clone takes
about 8 or 9 years to produce. The answers to the questions regarding the timing of events were unclear, leading to
two decades of great confusion. Continuity was eventually restored by The Clone Wars Season 6 and Tales of the Jedi.
Main Article: Dooku, Sifo-Dyas, and the Clone Army
- Clones soldiers take much longer than battle droids to produce, and are likely even more expensive, but are described as "immensely superior".
The Kaminoans are quickly proved correct about this, as the clones are capable of defeating significantly larger droid armies. It is very likely that
this is the largest clone army yet created, and probably the largest and most sophisticated cloning operation the galaxy had yet seen.
- Jango Fett was recruited by Lord Tyranus on one of the moons of Bogden, perhaps the Bog Moon seen in Droids 'The Revenge of Kybo Ren' (E8).
- Obi-Wan tells R4 to "use scramble code 5 to Coruscant, care of the Old Folks' Home." Scramble codes are a type of encrypted transmission. The 'Old Folks' Home'
is either the Jedi Temple, the Jedi High Council, or the cushion room Yoda and Mace use to meditate through the Force, take hypercom calls, and hang out and talk.
Supplementary material has established it is a code name for the Jedi Temple. Exactly what makes these transmissions more secure is uncertain.

- Using the same bounty hunter to assassinate Padme as was used as the template for the clone army is an essential part of Sidious' plan. Jango's contract with
the Kaminoans stipulates that he lives on Kamino while the clones are in production, and thus having Dooku hire him allows Sidious to lead the Jedi to
the army he needs them to find, at just the right time he needs them to find it: a moment so desperate that they are pleased to inherit it.
Main Article: Darth Sidious and The Plan
- The fact that none of the Jedi could see the creation of the clone army through their vision in the Force is further evidence to the Jedi that their ability to use
the Force has diminished. Ordinarily, something so significant would be seen eventually by some Jedi. The cloud of the dark side over their vision has severely
hampered their prophetic powers and insight into the present, while at the same time increased those of the Sith. The Jedi have come to rely on this vision
to such an extent that they don't know how to strategize without it, and seem helpless to change course in the coming events.
- Anakin's attachment to his mother causes his visions of her through the Force in his dreams. His feelings of loss regarding his mother take Anakin to a dark
place with his emotions, and in his dreams the Force shows him these dark visions. He feels that he doesn't have a choice but to react to these visions,
which leads him to further pain, suffering, and darkness. This is the same as his visions in Episode III, where his feelings of potential loss regarding Padme
lead him to feel that he doesn't have a choice but to react to those visions, leading him to the same darkness, and his completing his fall to the dark side.
- Jango Fett's ship is Slave One, an upgraded Firespray-31-class Interceptor, the same ship flown by his clone son Boba Fett decades later. He has
upgraded it with a more comprehensive weapons package, made it more difficult to track, and improved its sensors and jamming equipment.
- Obi-Wan's duel with Jango Fett shows that Jedi are not unstoppable even against a single opponent. That usually requires the opponent to have great skill,
and is more likely with armor, technology, unusual weapons, unusual situations, or some other advantage. It is certainly much harder to kill a Jedi than it is
to temporarily defeat one, but it is absolutely possible to frustrate a Jedi's objectives. Capturing or killing a Jedi is also not beyond the capacities of a single
opponent with the right abilities, place, and time. Mace Windu's duel with Jango shows why some advantage is usually needed, as even a great warrior
is unlikely to be able to defeat a Jedi master on a level playing field.
- Obi-Wan uses the Force to open a door on Kamino. He doesn't seem to access the electronics, merely to activate the physical mechanism with the Force.
- Geonosis, also called Geonosia, is a desert planet located in the Arkanis Sector of the Slice region of the Outer Rim, just north of the Corellian Run, very near
to Tatooine. It is a hot and rocky world with a breathable atmosphere, and a dry and arid climate. Despite its lack of oceans or seas, the planet does have
a water cycle and limited rainfall. It is the homeworld of the insectoid Geonosians. While not particularly advanced when their region was first colonized by
civilization from the Core, the intelligent Geonosians have become technologically advanced, and the planet is now significant in manufacturing.
- The first meeting of what will become the Separatist Council is held on Geonosis. Dooku, Count of Serenno, is joined by Viceroy Nute Gunray of the Trade Federation,
Foreman Wat Tambor of the Techno Union, Presidente Shu Mai of the Commerce Guild, Magistrate Passel Argente of the Corporate Alliance, Chairman San Hill
of the InterGalactic Banking Clan, Senator Rogwa Wodrata of Alliga, Senator Tikkes, who is the former Quarren representative from Mon Cala, Archduke Poggle
the Lesser of Geonosis, and one other attendee who cannot be easily identified from the angle of the shot.
- Dooku says he is confident that 10,000 more starsystems will join the Separatists once they have the support of the trade guilds, which gives a sense of how many major
systems it would take to be a significant threat to the Republic as a competing state. Lucas original assertion was that 24,372 starsystems are members of the Republic,
and all other worlds of lesser population or importance are only within Republic jurisdiction. Assuming that many, but not all, of these systems Dooku mentions are
member worlds, this will essentially fragment the galaxy into two decently matched sides, with the Republic holding an advantage in systems and in population.
Main Article: The Galactic Republic and the Neutral Systems
- Qui-Gon's voice can be heard saying "Anakin, no!" as he is slaughtering the Tuskans. This is the earliest example of evidence of Qui-Gon's preservation in the Force,
however he does not succeed in communicating with any Jedi at this early stage in his reemergence.
- Yoda seems to be connected with Anakin in the Force well enough to sense his pain during the massacre of the Tuskans, or Anakin is so strongly connected to
the Force in general that it was possible for this to be sensed so vividly, or both. Either way, strong visions about others are usually connected to strong
emotions about that person, and Yoda is known to have spent time with Anakin during his training.
- When Obi-Wan's ship is damaged, the signal isn't getting through to Coruscant because it's too far away, so he asks R4 to boost the power. Unable to reach
Coruscant, he tries to call Anakin on Naboo, only to find his signal is on Tatooine. This indicates that if you know someone's tracking frequency you can locate
where they are, unless this is only possible because the Jedi and/or the Republic use some sort of an IFF (Identify Friend-or-Foe) system for security.
Main Article: Hyperspace Communications
- When Obi-Wan's message is retransmitted to Coruscant, there is a small assembly in Palpatine's office, where the Chancellor is joined by his aides, Sly Moore and
Dar Wac, Senate Speaker Mas Amedda, Senators Ask Aak, Lexi Dio, Ronet Coorr, Ister Paddie, Bail Organa, Representative Jar Jar Binks, Jedi Masters Yoda,
Mace Windu, Plo Koon, and Stass Allie, as well as Master Luminara Unduli and her Padawan Barriss Offee.
Obi-Wan's holo message tells those in the Chancellor's office that Count Dooku has signed a treaty with the Commerce
Guild and the Corporate Alliance. Less than a minute later Senator Organa remarks there can be no doubt
the Commerce Guilds are preparing for war, to which Palpatine replies, "Count Dooku must have made a treaty with
them." Is he being snarky or is this an editing or script mistake? It seems like the order of these scenes was reversed.
- It seems Sidious wasn't only trying to lure the Jedi to Kamino with the assassination attempt, he was also using it as incentive for Gunray to sign the treaty
and join the Separatists, as well as to create a situation through which he could manipulate the gullible Jar-Jar Binks, now representing Naboo, into proposing
giving him extraordinary powers. It is likely he had alternative candidates, but an honest and spontaneous desire to make someone a dictator is far more
convincing to others than a partisan one, even if it does come from the representative of his own homeworld.
Main Article: Darth Sidious and The Plan
- Dooku is almost completely honest with Obi-Wan in their prison chat, only Dooku is leaving out that he is the apprentice of the Sith Lord he mentions.
Because the Jedi do not trust anything the Sith say, and because Dooku was obviously being deceptive after he is revealed to be a Sith, the Jedi do not
pay enough attention to what he has told Obi-Wan. The fact that he revealed so much in an attempt to lure a respected Jedi over to his camp shows
the confidence which the Sith have in the indetectability of their plans, whether that confidence is warranted or not. Dooku's point is that the Republic
is led by the Sith, so joining him is fighting them, which is of course half true, since both sides are led by the Sith. Fighting for either is fighting against and
fighting for the Sith, which is exactly what Sidious wants and is the entire plan, to engulf the Jedi with the dark side from all sides, leaving them no allies.
Main Article: Darth Sidious and The Plan
- When Jar Jar proposes giving the Chancellor emergency powers, Tundra Dowmeia and the Quarren delegation seem to love the idea. Po Nudo and the Aqualish
delegation from Ando do not. Ando is known to shortly after become one of the many starsystems Dooku previously mentioned which join the Separatist
Alliance at the first opportunity, and Senator Nudo becomes a member of the Separatist Council. Senator Dowmeia, on the other hand, represents the Quarren
loyalists, and was already brought in to replace Senator Tikkes, who is a leader of the Quarren Isolation League, and who will also sit on the Separatist Council.
- The Grand Army of the Republic is formed in 7955 (22 BBY), giving the Republic its first standing army in a millennium. It combines the huge clone army with
experienced officers from the Republic's Judicial Forces as strategic and logistical staff officers, and the Jedi as the general staff officers and field commanders.
Its initial troop strength of 200,000 is quickly brought close to 1.2 million soon after the start of the war, and will tend to increase in size throughout the war.
- Without any legal order or official permission, Anakin breaks into a Geonosian factory, and proceeds to murders a bunch of the workers and guards who try
to detain him. The Republic isn't at war, Anakin has no way of knowing this factory is connected to Obi-Wan's disappearance, and even if he did, it would not
give the Jedi ethical permission to start killing people. He doesn't seem to have a problem with this, so it seems like slaughtering Tusken women and children
is crossing the line for Anakin, but adult male factory workers in their own factory on their own planet can be carved up at will. This may be an example of
humanoid racism towards an insect species, and disregard for their rights. The Geonosians were well justified sentencing him to death for this massacre.
If the programming for a droid is in their head, as seems to be the case given the B1 battle droid head on 3P0's body,
why would 3P0's head say "die, Jedi dogs!", and then ask "what did I say!?" rhetorically? Is the programming for
battlefield insults located in the torso? This ill-conceived 'humor' is part of the 3P0 being a clown bit that is
repeatedly interjected into an otherwise epic and tragic event, supposedly to make the scene less dark.
As an inversion of Episode V, 3PO had to lose his head, and have it incorrectly replaced, but that didn't
require this specific line of dialogue which is a distractingly noticable continuity error.
- Dooku has the Geonosians put on an arena execution in order to set a trap designed to take advantage of Jedi honor and lure them into a killing field.
The Jedi are clearly caught off guard by how well-prepared their enemies are, and how well they have planned for the task of taking on the Jedi, even
in groups. Had they determined that large forces were lying in wait they likely would have tried a different strategy, but are overconfident and possibly
arrogant about their abilities and combined strength. Dooku also seems surprised at times, but has wisely included contingencies into his plans.
- Commander Ponds, CT-411, is the first identified clone officer seen, conferring with Mace during the assault on the assembled Separatist starships.
He is later attached to the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps, and is seen over the next year in six episodes of The Clone Wars.
- Poggle sends his warriors to hide in the catacombs, allowing him to preserve significant forces lying in wait on the planet. Sometime later this year, once
enough time has passed and the Republic forces have largely moved on, they will succeed in liberating their homeworld, and restart their military
production. This will lead to the second Republic invasion of Geonosis over a year from this film, seen in The Clone Wars 'Landing at Point Rain' (S2E5).
- Anakin has his first duel with Dooku at their first meeting, and despite Anakin's prodigious nature, Dooku's experience as a Jedi Master, now magnified by his
use of the dark side, makes him decisively more powerful at this time. Nevertheless, it is clear the effort requires a great deal of concentration, as Anakin's
raw power with the Force is significant. This confrontation foreshadows their futures in a few ways, not the least of which is that Anakin will follow in Dooku's
footsteps as a fallen Jedi who becomes Sidious' replacement apprentice. Anakin's anger-filled statement to Padme on Tatooine that he will become the most
powerful Jedi ever is the same ambition already sought by Dooku, who tells Yoda he has become more powerful than any Jedi. This ambition to gain ultimate
power puts Dooku, and later Anakin, on a path that leads to the dark side, and ultimately their downfall.
- Dooku, revealed as Darth Tyranus, meets Darth Sidious on Coruscant at the LiMerge Power Company Tower, in an industrial sector of the city-planet that
appears somewhat derelict, and certainly isolated and run down. The surrounding area still appears to be functioning, but this building is used at this time
only by Sidious, who is in control of the shell corporation that owns the tower. This high-concept version of an abandoned warehouse is the perfect place
for a secret Sith temple and meeting place on Coruscant, not only because it is hidden in plain sight and out of view, but because the Sith and the dark side
represent the artificial and the unnatural, while the Jedi represent the spiritual and the natural.
- Obi-Wan doesn't believe that Sidious controls the Senate as Dooku informed them. Yoda says that Dooku's ways are now "lies, deceit, creating mistrust",
and as usual the Jedi dismiss valuable information the Sith tell them as having come from an unreliable source. They do decide to keep a closer eye on
the Senate, which is exactly what Sidious and Dooku want, as the Jedi will be looking for the hundreds of Senators that Dooku mentioned that are under
the influence of Sidious, rather than examining the continually growing power base of allies that their friendly ally Palpatine is amassing in the Senate.
- As clone forces depart, Palpatine is reviewing them from a balcony, along with his aide Dar Wac, Senate Speaker Mas Amedda, and five Senators, Gume Saam,
Ask Aak, Toonbuck Toora, and Bail Organa, as well as one other individual, who is indistinguishable but may be Senator Po Nudo, soon to be a Separatist.
ANALYSIS
The Jedi are apparently overwhelmed attempting to maintain order in the face of the Separatist movement. At this time there are around 10,000 Jedi,
and about 40% should be Younglings or Padawans. Others claim there are 10,000 Jedi Knights at this time, which would total over 16,000. Either way,
it would seem that the majority of the between 10,000 and 6000 Jedi Knights and Masters are occupied, with some peacekeeping, law enforcement,
or ambassadorial function, given that only a few hundred seem to be available to go to Geonosis near the end of the film. Yoda does not believe it would
be wise to tell the Senate their prophetic vision has become seriously hindered, suggesting that their enemies will multiply. The Jedi are highly regarded
by a great many in the galaxy, and yet there are also many that dislike them. Criminal elements may attempt to openly oppose the Jedi, but most of those
who regard the Jedi as a hindrance to their desires fear the power of the Jedi enough to restrain their ambitions. If the Jedi were known to be debilitated,
many would seize the opportunity to advance their goals, deepening the corruption crisis in the Republic at an extremely inopportune time.
Padme is targeted for assassination for leading the resistance to the creation of a Republic army in the Senate. This should indicate to the Jedi that the threat
emanates from within the Republic. It would be of no benefit to the Separatists for the Republic to create an army, which would weaken their bargaining
position and lead to a destructive war. Even when the evidence points to Gunray and Dooku, and it is clear that the party that benefits is some faction within
the Republic, the Jedi assume it is the trade guilds alone, and with good reason. What they are ignoring is that these forces are actually empowered by
the corrupt and evil leadership of both the Republic and the Separatists, who very much want a war. Those that will benefit from the war are those that create it.
The Jedi should be aware of this. The principle goals of the assassination attempts are getting Padme off of Coruscant to disrupt the anti-war faction in
the Senate, leading the Jedi to Kamino to discover the clone army, and setting all the players in motion towards Geonosis. Palpatine also used this opportunity
to put Anakin and Padme back together, perhaps having sensed in Anakin's strong feelings regarding her and realizing its potential to hinder his Jedi path.
The Jedi insist on the slow progression of their students, are often critical of them, and emphasize the place of an apprentice as subordinate. The aim is
to teach and reinforce humility, which is vital to maintaining a virtuous balance in the hearts of those who wield such extraordinary power. The Jedi are
aware that overconfidence is their greatest weakness, and arrogance their greatest shortcoming, and yet they feel their overall success rate in training
well-adjusted Jedi who don't become servants of evil is sufficient to overlook these flaws. As a collective, monastic order, the Jedi discourage personal
attachments and forbid the owning of personal property, beyond their lightsaber. While a Jedi's clothes and personal items are respected as theirs in
practice, all Jedi property is technically communal. In this time period, their equipment, vehicles, and basics are largely funded by the state. The Jedi act
as an independent branch of the government, that serves and advises the Senate and its Chancellor, but also monitors their integrity. Due in part to
the years of advanced lightsaber and martial arts training involved in becoming a Jedi capable of defending oneself and others, the Jedi train their
'younglings' to become child soldiers from a very early age. This is also done because the Jedi have enemies, chiefly in the world of organized crime,
and it would be generally irresponsible of them not to teach their most vulnerable how to defend themselves. Lightsaber training and martial arts aren't
just about combat for the Jedi, they are the primary method for Jedi to grow their abilities with the Force naturally, through utilization and self-discipline.
There has not been a full scale galactic war in around 1000 years, since the time of the formation of the current incarnation of the Galactic Republic.
This golden age has inevitably led to a period of stagnation and the disproportionate amassing of wealth and power where the Republic has become essentially
too successful for its own good, as is the case with most great civilizations. Nevertheless, the Republic was remarkably stable and peaceful for a millennium,
despite the existence of selfish interests that were often powerful. It is the reemergence of the Sith, a powerful cult with philosophical and practical motivations
for oppression, death, exploitation, and misery, that is the actual source of this new galactic war. The loyalty and partisanship that can be garnered from
an ideologically motivated movement like the Separatists is far more dangerous to the Republic than the bald-faced covetousness of the powerful interests.
That Nute Gunray has survived three trials in the Senate without being deposed as Viceroy of the Trade Federation shows the level of power which the corrupt
allies of the trade guilds have. Making sure the Senate remains incapable of tackling corruption and the run-away power of the trade guilds is vital to Sidious'
plan. The trade guilds' measures are increasingly effecting the worlds of the Rim regions negatively, fueling the growth of the Separatist movement.
Geonosian Industries is manufacturing a large battle droid army for the Separatists. Given that 10 years prior we have seen these same Baktoid Industries droids
used by the Trade Federation, it is clearly not illegal to manufacture battle droids. In the past only organizations of galactic scale like the trade guilds could
afford to buy and operate them in large quantities, but these 'private security' paramilitary armies were seen as legitimate components of the Republic.
The army being prepared for Dooku must be kept secret because its very existence is politically destabilizing, and will almost certainly lead directly to war.
When the Separatist Alliance treaty is signed, it creates a droid army that comprises nearly all the known military forces of the galaxy, excluding only the Jedi,
the Republic's Judicial Forces and Navy, and the local defence forces of some worlds. Without an army the Republic could be destroyed entirely, leaving
the Jedi no choice but to embrace the newly discovered clone army that was prepared for them.
The Commerce Guild and the Corporate Alliance are the last of the five major concerns to join the Separatists. The Commerce Guild, is one of the officially
liscenced galactic trade guilds, along with the IG Banking Clan, the Trade Federation, and the Techno Union. The other three have seats in the Galactic Senate,
but it is unclear if the Commerce Guild does as well. It may be in part that the Commerce Guild is less closely associated with one major species, as the other
trade guilds are, and whose home sectors are almost one and the same as the guilds themselves. The Commerce Guild is based on Felucia, but they are less
of a unified organization that has grown powerful than they are a conglomerate of powerful commercial interests and economic guilds. They tend to represent
the more entrenched and historically significant interests that grew important during periods of colonization and expansion. The Corporate Alliance, on the other
hand, represents the collective interests of a huge number of corporations, small, large, and galactic scale, which have grown and developed independent of the
liscenced trade guilds. While they have no Senate seat, they are in many ways more influential than even the trade guilds. Through their corporate contracts,
bureaucracy, and member companies, they have major influence on nearly every planet and have the power to effect trade and trade policy. For the Separatists,
having the endorsement of all four major trade guilds is vital, to ensure they will envoke their neutrality in any conflict and not cut off trade, supplies, and technology
to Separatist worlds. Even so, without the assurance of the neutrality of the Corporate Alliance, many planets would be too concerned about the economic fallout
of joining the Separatists to be swayed, and the Alliance would be fighting a disadvantaged battle uphill. The potential power all five organizations would wield
in a galaxy without the constraints of the Republic is enough of a lure for them to risk signing the treaty, believing that the corporate neutrality treaties of
the Republic will protect them in the event of war. They also believe the Republic to have no army beyond the Jedi, and that they will likely win easily.
The Battle of Geonosis marks the end of an era that goes back almost 8000 years, an era in which a single Jedi was so powerful that the Order could defeat
any threat that could realistically be mustered. The development and realization of battle droids that were sufficiently effective and able to be built and bought
in huge quantities (for those with vast financial resources), meant that droid armies capable of swarming and defeating Jedi could be deployed to so many worlds
the Jedi would be unable to concentrate their forces and defeat them. Only with the help of an army of their own can the Jedi stand up to this threat.
Sidious and Dooku were hoping to be able to wipe out much of the Jedi High Council in this battle. Yoda prevented that by arriving with the troops when he did.
Likewise, the Jedi are hoping to capture Dooku before he can escape, and perhaps prevent the galaxy from descending into total war.
Creating a situation by which the Jedi would invade Geonosis was also part of Sidious' ploy, as an easy means to gain sole propriety of the designs for
the death star battlestation. The Geonosians turned them over for safe keeping, and likely never saw them again. Sidious' plan ensures that at each step,
the Jedi, his allies, and his enemies willingly take actions that unknowingly help to further his goals. Most of Sidious' allies are those that see
themselves as important, and who see the majority of beings in the galaxy as unimportant and expendable pawns in their struggles for power.
They do not realize that to Sidious, everyone is unimportant and expendable.
Yoda was master to Dooku, Dooku was master to Qui-Gon, Qui-Gon was master to Obi-Wan, who like most elite Jedi, also apprenticed to Yoda at one
point. They are all strongly connected to each other in the Force, other than Obi-Wan and Dooku. This also represents a chain of teaching, a common
component of most religious orders. Yoda's teachings were taught to Qui-Gon through Dooku's idealistic lens, which probably affected Qui-Gon's
philosophical outlook. Dooku's idealistic take on Yoda's teachings was taught to Obi-Wan through Qui-Gon's lens. Despite being similarly idealistic,
Qui-Gon proved to be far more pious at heart, and Dooku more cynical. In a way, Obi-Wan completes a circle, where idealism tempered by piety
is tempered by his own realism, very much akin to Yoda. None of these Jedi had a single defining outlook, but it is notable that the very beliefs and
teachings that led Dooku to join the dark side also produced Qui-Gon's path. It is Qui-Gon's philosophy and his spiritual achievement in manifestation
after death which Yoda and Obi-Wan essentially adopt, and proves to be the path which preserves the Jedi Order and leads to the downfall of the Sith.
From Deleted Scenes
Mace and Obi-Wan's conversation on the landing pad shows how Mace's overconfidence leads him to continually recommend the Jedi do exactly what
Sidious wants them to do, in this case, travel to Kamino. Mace, and the High Council, have come to rely far too heavily on the prophetic power of Force
vision. Mace and Yoda constantly respond to questions asked in these times that it is impossible to know anything because of the disturbance in the Force.
They have nearly lost the skill for the kind of logic-based detective work that Obi-Wan just demonstrated in locating his destination of Kamino. At the same
time, Mace demonstrates he is a true Jedi and devoted to the ideals of the Order. Despite his opposition to training the 'Chosen One', and concerns about
Anakin's commitment, he trusts the will and essential goodness of the Force. When Obi-Wan tells him Anakin probably was too old to start training, and
that his emotional connections are becoming a problem, Mace tells him he "must have faith he will choose the right path." Whereas Qui-Gon represented
the archetypal idealist Jedi of any age, Mace represents the archetypal pragmatic Jedi. Both are meant as exemplars of the Jedi's noble nature.
Mace reveals himself to be as pious as Qui-Gon, but in keeping with the colors of their sabers, Qui-Gon focuses his faith on the will of the Living Force,
while Mace focuses his faith on the will of the Cosmic Force. If the prophecy says he will destroy the Sith, he trusts that Anakin will choose to do so.
As he believed, Anakin does ultimately choose the right path and destroy the Sith, but at a cost to the galaxy Mace would not have been so positive about.
Padme's lecture to Anakin that "popular rule is not democracy, it gives the people what they want not what they need", shows that she has an idealistic view of
democracy that comes from growing up on an idyllic world. Democracy usually is popular rule, and democracies are just as capable of electing sociopaths like
Palpatine and corrupt con-artists representing private interests as they are wise leaders looking to put the public good first. The great value of democracy
is its ability to prevent the centralization of power under any leader or leaders, be they bad or good. The unfortunate end of most democracies comes when
the powers that be have perfected manipulating the system to the point that power has become centralized anyway. Her belief that the solution is to work
to make the system more democratic again is noble, but ultimately probably futile, once the corruption of this magnitude has become entrenched.
Padme clearly wishes she could live closer to her family, and have a family of her own. She makes direct mention of the fact that she serves as Senator for the sake
of helping others, not because she covets the position. Her desire to start her own family, and her preference for that life to that of politics is a key component of
her character that makes her actions in this film and Episode III much more understandable. The visit to her home and her family make her attitude, relationship
with Anakin, and future actions make more emotional and logical sense. Her conversation with Anakin about the refugee kids in the photo on her wall who were
sweet, but couldn't survive off of their homeworld, is foreshadowing her own tragic end. Despite her intellect, talent, and values, the utopian planet she comes
from leaves her unfit to survive the magnitude of the evil machinations of those in the galaxy at large which are unfolding in this time period.
Many politicians of good intention join the Separatists having determined that the corruption at the heart of the Republic cannot be fixed. This is of course exactly
what Dooku tells Padme at her pretrial interview. While the major muscle of the Separatist Alliance comes from the trade guilds that back it, the Alliance would be
nothing but a giant corporate army without the many worlds that are its founding members. Dooku relies on the honest support of well-intentioned leaders from
thousands of planets, primarily in the Rim regions, most of which have much smaller populations than the megacity worlds of the Core. Dooku asks Padme
and Naboo to join him, not only in exchange for clemency, but because Naboo is a perfect example of a planet whose happy existence is unnecessarily complicated
by the politics, economics, crime, corruption, and indifference of the Core. The possibility of creating a confederation of independent star systems no longer subject
to the control of the fading Republic is the bait that power-seeking individuals like Dooku and some of the other Separatist leaders use to garner legitimate support.
What Dooku has to say to her, like what he tells Obi-Wan before, is basically the truth, "it is time to start over". In truth the Republic probably was unsalvageable,
and any kind of honest attempt at reformation would be fiercely resisted by the wealthy and corrupt who would lose their power. Fighting for the Republic is billed
as a fight to preserve democracy, but is in reality fighting to preserve this corrupt power structure. Fighting for the Separatists is billed as a fight for freedom, but
is in reality fighting to install an even more corrupt power structure. This is clearly shown by Poggle the Lesser, Archduke of Geonosis, at Padme and Anakin's trial,
who tells them that "we build weapons -- that is our business. Of course we're prepared." The Separatists are essentially a well-intentioned movement with billions
supporting it in hopes of a better future free from the corruption of the Republic, who are backed and dominated by the very forces that make the Republic corrupt.
