The Star Wars Holiday Special was a campy, made-for-TV variety show which aired on 17 November 1978. It was somewhat similar to
other holiday variety shows which were common on television in that era. The show was intended to capitalize on excitement about
the original film, and to maintain excitement while Episode V was being created. The content was intended to be fun, family-friendly
entertainment, which was not strictly concerned with issues of canon or continuity. Originally based on a story idea from George
Lucas, creators of the show took the production in diverse directions, resulting in a very eclectic product. Lucas described this
production process by saying, "it just kept getting reworked and reworked, moving away into this bizarre land. They were trying
to make one kind of thing, and I was trying to make another, and it ended up being a weird hybrid between the two." Lucas did
not have much involvement in the actual production, besides contributing to the story of the animated segment, and was displeased
with the final product. As it was not intended to be a canon story, its characters and the events portrayed have no bearing on canon.
As with other apocryphal material, the story and characters are considered to be legends, however big-picture details like planets are
considered to be supplementary material, and therefore are semi-canonical unless in conflict with Lucas canon material. The planet
Panna and its moon Panna Prime are seen for the first time, as is an unidentified asteroid field, and the previously unknown planet
Amorphiia is also mentioned. The Holiday Special material takes place on six worlds:
The animated segment, entitled The Story of the Faithful Wookiee, was the only portion of the Special which approximated
an actual canon adventure, as Lucas oversaw the development of its story. At the same time, it was intended to be a cartoonish
interpretation which was not strictly concerned with compatibility with canon. In many ways, this animated short was the origin
of the series Droids, and was an inspiration behind the original Clone Wars series. This story was the first appearance of Boba
Fett, as his appearance as a background character in Episode IV was in a scene which was deleted from the original release.
